Agave (Century Plants)

Agaves are cultivated in South Africa in fact all over the world. These plats have a typical monocarpic habit meaning that the plants only flower once whereafter they die. Flowering can take years, even decades and is the character from which the common name century plants are derived from. These plants are very hardy and some species can tolerate extremely hot and cold temperature. These plants tend to grow very large with the inflorescences reaching several meters high.
